OEM vs ODM vs private label
Three ways to buy. Most buyers start with OEM to test demand, then move selected references to ODM once volume justifies it.
| OEM | ODM | |
|---|---|---|
| Development cost | None — existing moulds | Tooling or design cost, usually waived above 5,000 pcs |
| Lead time | 45–70 days | from artwork approval, confirmed per order |
| MOQ | From 500 pcs per SKU | From 1,000 pcs per SKU |
| What changes | Logo, colours, packaging, artwork | Materials, dimensions, function, formula, mechanism |
| Best for | Brands that need speed and predictable cost | Brands that need a product competitors do not have |
Private label, specifically
Private label sits between the two: the product is ours, the identity is yours. You get your logo, your colour way, your packaging artwork, your barcode and your insert card, running on tooling and a bill of materials that have already been proven in production.
What private label does not give you is exclusivity in the absolute sense — another buyer can order the same base model with different branding. If exclusivity matters commercially, that is an ODM conversation, and it should be priced as one.
What we need from you to start
- Product reference or a description of what you want made
- Target quantity for the first order, and an idea of annual volume
- Destination country — it determines the compliance route and the freight estimate
- Whether you need your own artwork, or want to start with our structural design
- Any certification your market requires: FDA, REACH, LFGB, CPSIA, APPA
Send those five things and you will get a quotation with FOB pricing, MOQ options, tooling cost, lead time and a freight estimate. It takes one business day, and it does not commit you to anything.

Working with PetInWholesale as your China pet products manufacturer
Most brands that source pet products wholesale from China start with OEM on an existing reference, because it is fast and the tooling risk is low. They move selected references to ODM once volume justifies a development cost.
If you are comparing China pet food manufacturers or China pet supplies manufacturers, the questions that actually differentiate them are specification discipline, tooling ownership and documentation quality. Those three are where PetInWholesale is built to compete.
Buyers searching for OEM pet products want an existing reference produced under their brand. Buyers searching for ODM pet products want the product developed to their specification. PetInWholesale does both, and tells you which one you actually need.
