What does a pet products OEM manufacturer actually do?

An OEM manufacturer takes an existing, proven product design and produces it under your brand. You supply the logo, colours, packaging artwork, barcode and insert copy; the factory supplies the moulding, assembly, packing and export documentation. It is the fastest and cheapest route to a private-label range because no new product development is required.

An ODM manufacturer develops the product to your specification — materials, dimensions, function, mechanism or formula. It costs more in tooling and time and produces something no competitor can buy from the same factory.

Private label sits between the two: the product is the factory's, the identity is yours.

Which pet products can be manufactured in China?

Pet food manufacturing covers extruded dry food, wet food and retort canning, treats and chews, and functional nutrition. Pet supplies cover hard goods and soft goods for dogs, cats, birds, aquariums, reptiles and small animals — everything from bowls and water dispensers to beds, harnesses, carriers, grooming tools and aquarium equipment.

What is the minimum order quantity?

MOQ starts at 500 pieces per SKU for pet supplies. Pet food requires higher volumes because of the production economics of extrusion and canning: 2,000 pieces for treats, 3,000 for dry food, and 5,000 for wet food and canning.

Mixed-SKU cartons are accepted, so a first order can spread the minimum across several references rather than concentrating it on one.

How long does production take?

Standard lead time for pet supplies is 25-35 days after artwork approval. Treats run 30 days, dry food 35 days, wet food and canning 45 days. New tooling adds 20-35 days on top, and an ODM project that includes sample approval typically runs 45-70 days end to end.

Which certifications matter for export?

The requirement depends on the product and the destination. For pet food entering the United States, the relevant regime is FDA facility registration together with AAFCO ingredient and feeding-trial requirements. In the EU, pet food and materials must meet REACH, and food-contact surfaces may require LFGB compliance. Pet toys fall under CPSIA and ASTM F963 in the US. Aquarium products follow APPA guidance.

Production runs in factories holding BSCI social-compliance audits and ISO 9001 quality management certification; we support destination-market testing and prepare the declaration documents your broker needs.

What are the Incoterms and who pays for freight?

EXW, FOB, CIF and DDP are all quoted. FOB is the default because it keeps export clearance on the manufacturer's side and duty, import compliance and inland delivery on the buyer's — where their broker, licences and duty rates already apply.

CIF includes ocean freight and marine cargo insurance. DDP includes duty and import clearance, and requires the manufacturer to act as importer of record, which is not possible in every market.
